Fieldnote started in a garage in 2019 with one canvas tote and a stubborn belief that most things are over-designed and under-built.
How we work
We run small batches on purpose. It means we sell out sometimes, and it means we can change a pattern when it isn't right instead of clearing a warehouse first.
Every product here has been carried, washed, spilled on, or cooked with by somebody who works here. If it doesn't survive that, it doesn't get listed.
We restock rather than chase a season. The tote you buy in three years should be the same tote.

What things are actually made of
No proprietary names for ordinary fabric. Here is the whole list.
16 oz cotton canvas
Unbleached, milled in North Carolina. Stiff at first, softens with use, never quite goes limp.
Garment-dyed ringspun cotton
5.3 oz, pre-shrunk after dyeing so the fit stops moving after the first wash.
18/8 stainless
Double-wall vacuum, powder-coated outside, no liner to flake or hold flavour.
Bridle leather & solid brass
Vegetable-tanned, from a tannery that has been doing it since 1905. Brass, not plated steel.
Shipping
Orders placed before 2pm ship the same business day; everything else goes out the next. Standard shipping is free over $75 and $6 below that. Expedited is available at checkout.
We ship to the US and Canada. Canadian orders may be subject to duties collected at delivery.
Returns
Thirty days, no restocking fee. Unworn and unwashed with tags attached for apparel; unopened for pantry goods. Email us and we'll send a prepaid label.
If something fails because we built it wrong, that isn't a return — that's a replacement, and there's no time limit on it.
Product care
- Canvas & cotton — machine wash cold, hang dry. Skip the dryer and things last considerably longer.
- Waxed canvas — spot clean only, re-wax once a year. Never machine wash.
- Leather — wipe with a damp cloth, condition twice a year.
- Stainless — dishwasher safe, though hand washing keeps the powder coat looking new.
